About Us

What is CUSLI-Nexus?

CUSLI Nexus explores the legal and policy relationship between Canada and the United States.  As such, it seeks to report on the top stories impacting the Canada-U.S. relationship, under-reported aspects of law, politics, and culture in both countries, and show explore the legal similarities and differences between Canada and the United States.  In doing so, it provides a forum for students, legal professionals, policy experts, and others to share insights on the policy and legal aspects of one of the world's most important bilateral relationships.

CUSLI Nexus is a project of the Canada-United States Law Institute (CUSLI), a bi-national, not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary entity created jointly in 1976 by Case Western Reserve University School of Law located in Cleveland, Ohio USA and the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.  CUSLI serves as a forum where the respective governments, business communities, legal professional, academics, non-governmental organizations and the media explore and address the issues confronting the Canada-United States relationship.

Who Are We?

Chairman -- David R. Kocan

David Kocan is the Managing Director of the Canada-U.S. Law Institute.  Mr. Kocan is also a Visiting Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law where he teaches international law.  He earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Law and as captain of the Case Western Niagara International Moot Court Team.  He previously served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Panama, worked as webmaster for a major e-commerce firm, and lived for a year studying Mandarin and business in China.


Editor-in-Chief --  Keith Edmund White

Keith White is the Editor-in-Chief and Founder of the CUSLI-Nexus Blog.  Mr. White earned his J.D. from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he served as Production Editor for the Canada-United States Law Journal and participated on the Niagara International Moot Court team.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, where he was part of the Politics Honors program and a member of the Washington Literary Society and Debating Union.  He previously managed Proliferation Press, a blog focused on WMD/CBRN proliferation, and slightly nerds out over Weimar-era German history.  He currently works as a policy and financial analyst in Lansing, Michigan, along with some remote legal and policy research consulting at Woodrow Wilson Center's Canada Institute in Washington, D.C.


Senior Editor -- Justin McNeil        

Justin McNeil is Senior Editor of the CUSLI-Nexus Blog.  Mr. McNeil earned his J.D. from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law with a Concentration in International Law with Honors, where he served as a Senior Editor for the Journal of International Law and received a Social Justice Fellowship.  He earned his undergraduate degree in History from the University of Kentucky, focusing mostly on European and Ancient History.  He avidly follows English Premier League soccer and is currently intent on relearning Spanish and improving his German.
